Our Goal
Improve our local and global communities through environmentalism, civic engagement, and philanthropy.
Performance Highlights
Environmentalism and Sustainability
Commitment: Contribute to a healthy environment by using less material, recycling, lowering energy use, and eliminating harmful materials from our products.
Energy use: As a technology company, we affect the environment and sustainability through our reliance on energy. To reduce our impact, we have implemented energy saving programs in offices around the world, including the use of Energy Star certified products. We also actively encourage carpooling or the use of public transportation by our employees.
Waste reduction: McAfee is particularly pleased with our efforts in waste reduction, especially product packaging. In recent years, McAfee has moved toward the distribution of products and updates electronically. We recently launched an initiative to deliver all new enterprise releases electronically and only manufacture physical media for customers who demand it. This is a win for all stakeholders. Our customers can order, receive, and install our products immediately. We benefit through cost savings in product packaging. And the environment benefits from reduced packaging waste as well as reduced emissions from delivery vehicles. For the products that we do offer to consumers in stores, McAfee has been an early adopter in the software industry of smaller, less wasteful packaging. You can see examples of the significantly smaller packaging by visiting computer and other retailers who carry our products.
Recycling: McAfee manages recycling programs throughout our global offices. These programs include recycling of paper, metals, and plastics. In addition, we are looking at ways to support the recycling lifecycle by incorporating post-consumer materials into our product packaging. In particular, we are moving toward delivering our high-end enterprise products (which include software and hardware) using brown recycled packaging.
Product materials: Although McAfee produces software code, some of our products ship as a package of software and hardware. And hardware often involves the use of certain sensitive materials. McAfee is working with our suppliers and hardware manufacturers as part of our compliance with the European Union’s Directive known as RoHS. We are well underway with our effort with our hardware partners to identify and mitigate use of the identified substances, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium that are included in the RoHS directive.
Civic Engagement
Commitment: Be an engaged participant in global, national, state, and local public policy processes; support employee participation in civic activities
An important component of corporate citizenship is being engaged in the civic process where we live and work. Toward this goal, McAfee participates in the civic and public policy processes in numerous ways. McAfee executives and experts provide input and feedback to government and policy officials as they craft legislation, laws, and regulations. We fully disclose our lobbying activities through semiannual reports filed with the US Congress, which can be viewed by accessing the Website for the US Senate. McAfee also supports and participates in industry trade associations, such as the Cyber Security Industry Alliance, the Business Software Alliance, and the Information Technology Association of America, to represent our views in these processes. At this time, McAfee does not have a political action committee (PAC), nor do we make corporate political contributions.
In addition to our participation as a company, we believe it is important for our employees to be involved in the civic process. McAfee encourages and supports our employees to fulfill their civic duties by voting.
Philanthropy
Commitment: Leverage our time, talent, and funds to give back to those in need in the communities in which we live and work.
McAfee encourages commitment to the communities in which our employees live and work. We strive to improve our local and global communities through strategic philanthropy—whether through giving (grants, matching gifts, scholarships, in kind) or volunteering.
Full information on our commitment to philanthropy can be found in McAfee Community Involvement. A few recent highlights:
Grants: McAfee, through the McAfee Endowment Fund, offers financial grants to various community organizations around the world. Focused on advancing the state of cyber security and safety worldwide (but also including additional donations for disaster relief and human services), McAfee makes numerous financial grants each year to organizations that serve our local communities. Since 2001, McAfee has made grants totaling nearly $2 million, including $250,000 to United Way of New York City for post-9/11 support, $164,000 (combined with $100,000 in employee donations) to Give2Asia’s Tsunami Recovery Fund, and over $500,000 in grants and in-kind support to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief.
Recipient organizations have spanned our geographies and include:
- The Americas: Project HELP, American Red Cross, Teach for America, National Cyber Security Alliance
- Europe: Cork Simon Community, Afasic, CidS!
- Asia Pacific: Give2Asia
Matching Gift: McAfee also matches all North American employee donations to eligible community organizations (up to $1,000 per employee per year). Since 2001, McAfee’s matching gifts have exceeded $300,000.
In-Kind: McAfee contributes to community groups with in-kind donations. We organize collection drives through which employees have donated thousands of dollars worth of canned goods, clothing, toys, books, cell phones, school supplies, and more. McAfee has also donated products to community recipients. In 2004, we announced a donation of more than $1 million in McAfee intrusion prevention technology to the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 2005, one component of our support of Hurricane Katrina relief was a donation of security products to the American Red Cross to provide protection on new networks being set up at relief centers.
Volunteering: McAfee supports the volunteer interests of our employees by organizing employee team volunteer projects. In the last two years, employees have planted gardens to benefit a homeless shelter (Cork, Ireland), refurbished houses for the financially needy (Plano, TX; Silicon Valley, CA), raised money for breast cancer and juvenile diabetes research (Plano, TX), sorted and wrapped holiday toys and gifts for needy children (Silicon Valley, CA), and much more.
